URWAN, the role of art for sustainability in Ferla

URWAN, the role of art for sustainability in Ferla

The urban redesign process, which has involved the entire Ferla community in recent months through the Start Park process and methodology, thanks to the work of SVI.MED. for the URWAN project – Urban Regenerative Water Avant-garde(N), is proceeding with great success.

Following the launch events and co-design workshops, on Wednesday 14 May it was finally time to unleash our creativity, giving it space without limits or boundaries!

With the involvement of Collettivo Ocra from Ragusa — an association that ‘strongly believes in the power of community, nature and art’, combining urban regeneration with art and activism (artivism) — the students of I.C. Valle dell’Anapo took part in various recreational and artistic activities with a twofold objective: to highlight the beauty of the Green Wall and making nature sprout in the surrounding area, and beyond.

In their most varied forms, art and creativity have the great power to convey fundamental messages through a universal language. This language is capable of transcending all boundaries and diversity, raising awareness among a wide audience and triggering gradual transformations and changes.

From now on, the Green Wall (Wall2Water), which is monitored through the CARDIMED project, will always be colourful despite the changing seasons. The Piazzetta Aldo Moro, an important meeting place for young people in Ferla, will be even more lively thanks to the outdoor games painted by the students. The green areas of the school and Piazzetta Aldo Moro will become home to pollinating insects, which are indispensable to the ecosystem. Meanwhile, the fields around the school and the town itself will become increasingly enriched with different types of plants, which will grow in the coming months thanks to the seed bombs created by the students.

This is all an example of art representing not only social and climate challenges, but also collective solutions. It represents an affirmation of commitment to sustainability and the beauty of nature.
